In the Red is a film about the Strike Debt group, an offshoot organization of Occupy Wall Street in New York. Strike Debt initiates several activities to expose hidden mechanisms of financial capitalism. Next to organizing protests and publishing a handbook, the Debt Resistors’ Operations Manual, Strike Debt buys, for very little money, huge amounts of personal debt that banks have already written off; they then abolish these debts and free the debtors from their bills. This way, Strike Debt shows how the secondary debt market works. In the Red follows the activists over several weeks, revealing their collective and non-hierarchical decision-making processes.
