Requiem for M is a memorial to the 2009 Maguindanao Massacre. On their way to file a certificate of candidacy for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the Philippine province of Maguindanao, 58 journalists, family members, and supporters of opposition candidate Esmael Mangudadatu were kidnapped and killed. Kiri Dalena captures scenes from the funerals of the victims and plays them in reverse, in the wistful yearning to turn back time to before the tragedy occurred. Her film tackles one of the Philippines’ most brutal political murders and the culture of impunity that keeps plaguing the country.
