An (electronic) meditation on Japan. McElwee uses cleverly devised montage and intensive electronic processing to create a visual symbiosis of Japanese landscapes, cities and architecture. Like a prism or kaleidoscope, the collage interlaces differing motifs and levels of such complexity that the result is a kind of digital abstract painting. Driven by a sound collage of similar density, like resonant waves of ether, the tape develops tremendous audiovisual compression and tension.
